My thoughts and reviews!

I'm trying to be more intentional and purposeful about media I watch/read/play/listen to/etc lately, and part of that includes writing reviews for all of it, no matter how small!
This is just a big collection of them all in one place, but you can check out my Backloggd/Serializd/Letterboxd/RYM/Goodreads for more specificity!

Marty Supreme

Josh Safdie

Film-making is an art, and Marty Supreme is certainly art. I can tell you that for certain because I (an idiot) am fairly certain I didn't properly understand what it was getting at. This might sound like a criticism at first, but honestly that's how I like films. I want to be able to rewatch a film three or four times and come away with another piece of the picture that reframes what I already thought. So yes, Marty Supreme is art, and yes, I will probably be rewatching it at some point.

As for my terribly uncultured first impressions? This is a wonderfully written story about a horrible rat bastard of a man, and possibly Timothée Chalamet's best performance I've seen. Seriously, he absolutely disappears into the role, it's almost uncanny. It doesn't really give you a moment to breathe with everything happening, but I think that's intentional, because it certainly sets a tone.

The Blacklist

Jon Bokenkamp

I enjoy a monster of the week drama as much as anyone, and The Blacklist certainly starts out with a unique twist on the genre. Unfortunately, it suffers from drawing its plot out far too long, with writing that feels ultimately indecisive and at times stilted. By the end, I was left with the feeling that it really could have been a much better series if it was condensed down to 5 or so seasons.

Still, there are a handful of great performances. If you can get past the writing and pacing difficulties and feel like watching roughly 150 hours of James Spader being charismatic to camera, then you'll probably get what you're looking for.

House Flipper 2

Frozen District

House Flipper 2 is a game with 24 separate choices for kitchen cabinet handles, each of which can have up to 45 different materials. That sentence alone should tell you if the game is for you.
I opened this game and promptly lost thirteen hours across a whole boxing day to arranging color coordinated toilet rolls and picking undertones in paints that my partner mistook for identical whites. And I enjoyed it!
If you're the sort of freak (affectionate) that loves arranging candles on a windowsill or finding the prettiest way to display your books on the shelf, you'll love this game. If you want a cozy relaxing time to just make a welcoming little home, you'll love this game. If that all sounds incredibly boring to you, you probably won't.

Does it suffer from some issues? Sure, though they're mostly in the technical glitch department. Shadows live longer than the things casting them sometimes, and my head has a concerning tendency to separate itself from my body for... some reason.
Also there aren't enough curtains or drapes.

But if you can overlook the occasional jank, House Flipper 2 is a wonderful extension of the original, and certainly worth checking out.

Superman (2025)

James Gunn

This might just be my favorite depiction of Superman on screen. It understands the source material on such a core level, from Superman as an unrelenting force of good and kindness in the face of a world often absent it, to Lex Luthor as the supreme hater of all time.

It feels like watching a comic book play out on screen, and it's so refreshing to see a superhero movie full of color and vibrancy, especially a DC one.

Easily my favorite movie of 2025. Kindness is the real punk rock.
